Adolescent & Adult: Therapy

We offer therapy for adolescence and adults who stutter.

Therapy will involve:

  • Tailoring a therapy program to suit you
  • Teaching you how to do therapy
  • Helping to reduce negative thoughts about stuttering
  • Helping you to improve your confidence with communication
  • A supportive environment where you receive reassurance and support

There is a range of evidence-based approaches for adolescents and adults who stutter. We understand that every adolescent and adult is different. After assessment and discussion with you, we will recommend an approach that we feel will benefit you most, and then tailor it to suit you. There are a range of therapy evidence-based approaches which we commonly use:

  • The Camperdown Program – If you wish to learn more about the Camperdown Program click here.
  • Self-imposed Time Out
  • Syllable-timed speech

For all therapy approaches, we recommended that adolescents attend weekly therapy sessions with their parent, and complete daily home practice. Some adolescents are motivated to reduce their stuttering, and have the maturity to take on most of the responsibility for therapy. Other adolescents are not motivated to reduce their stuttering, and this is not the right time to pursue speech therapy. It is important for all adolescents to feel supported by their family and speech pathologist regardless of whether they pursue therapy. We are aware that stuttering therapy in adolescence needs extra sensitivity as it is a challenging transitional period and adolescents may have received negative comments, had previous mixed therapy experiences, negative beliefs about their stuttering, poor self-confidence and stuttering-related anxiety.

For adults, we commonly use the Camperdown Program, but we also use Self-imposed Time Out and Syllable-timed speech. Adults attend weekly therapy sessions and complete daily home practice. Stuttering therapy with adults is often very rewarding as they are self-motivated to reduce their stuttering, and have the maturity and patience to complete daily practice. We are aware that stuttering therapy in adults needs extra sensitivity as adults may have negative beliefs about their stuttering and stuttering-related anxiety.

We offer therapy for adolescents and adults at our Telehealth Clinic and our Melbourne Clinic. Research has shown that those who receive telehealth therapy progress as quickly as in-clinic therapy. If you wish to learn more about our clinics, please click here.
